Greek post-metal force Urstaat have reimagined one of their most harrowing compositions, and the result hits even harder.
The Athens four-piece — drawing from dense stoner grooves and tectonic post-metal atmosphere — has released a vocal version of "Between the Sea and the Security Fence," now featuring guest vocalist Kostis Benning. The original was a crushing instrumental. This version turns it into something confrontational: a direct human voice that refuses to be ignored.
Lyrically, the track stands in stark confrontation with displacement, memory, and survival. Images of olive trees, open skies, and lost freedom collide with the brutal refrain: "Between the sea and the fence we are dead." This is not metaphor for the sake of art — it's a witness account turned into sound.
"We will rise again, freedom is our name" — repeated through the track — doesn't come off as hollow optimism. It feels earned, defiant, rooted in something that runs deeper than sound.
Urstaat is a four-piece band from Athens operating in the underground with serious momentum: a national tour across Greece in 2024 with Sevengill, a spot on the Noise from Above #01 vinyl compilation alongside key acts from the Greek underground, and a growing international profile. This track should broaden that reach considerably.
