Tzompantli, the indigenous/traditional metal collective led by Xibalba guitarist Brian Itztlakamayeh Ortiz, released the three-track EP Temilotzin today via 20 Buck Spin, timed to Indigenous Peoples' Day. It is acoustic, sung entirely in Náhuatl, and draws lyrics from Náhuatl warrior-poets. The tracks are exclusive to the EP and will not appear on the band's third album, due in 2027.
Ortiz says the release is deeply personal: written to honor ancestors and Indigenous peoples, and in the aftermath of losing his best friend and dog, Soprano, along with other family and friends. The EP is named for Temilotzin, a warrior-poet remembered for his poem about friendship and his bond with Cuauhtémoc, the last Mexica emperor.
Instrumentation includes huehuetls, death whistles, flutes, shells, shakers and guiros. Track list: 1. Temilotzin 2. Xolotl 3. Nitlayocoya. It is pay-what-you-want on Bandcamp this week and on all streaming platforms. Album details are expected in early 2027.
