Finnish metal newcomers Segmentia have announced themselves to the world with their debut single, "Before The Dawn," out now via Inverse Records. The track—the opening chapter of the band's upcoming debut album—weaves heavy guitar textures with melancholic melodies, drawing immediate comparisons to Paradise Lost's gothic metal landmark One Second.
Frontman and composer Jere Luokkamäki explains the inspiration: "When I composed the piano melody for the song, I was inspired by Paradise Lost's One Second. The heavy guitars are the backbone of the track, emphasizing the atmosphere I was aiming for."
Lyrically, the song takes a different angle on love—not empowerment, but something far more lingering. Lead lyricist Kansana says: "Love songs, especially breakup songs, are often some kind of empowerment anthems — I don't know how to write those. I wanted to approach the lyrics in a broader temporal context — what about when the wounds have healed, when anger and bitterness have subsided? Do we dare to walk the path all the way to grace?"
The music video—described as visually rich as a French film—was filmed in a 200-year-old Ostrobothnian house called 'Itämäen talo' and serves as the first chapter of an audiovisual trilogy. Previously previewed on Finnish national radio station YleX, the single is now available on all streaming platforms.
