Jean-Michel Jarre will release a 50th anniversary edition of his landmark album Oxygene on November 20, 2026 via BMG, featuring a new 2026 remaster from the original tapes and the album in Dolby Atmos for the first time.
Originally released in France in 1976 and internationally in 1977, Oxygene was recorded in the former kitchen of Jarre's Paris apartment on an eight-track tape machine, a homemade mixing desk and a small collection of synths. It went on to sell more than 18 million copies worldwide and helped bring electronic music to a global audience.
The Dolby Atmos mix was created by David Kosten, Steven Wilson and Jarre for Distant Swimmer, the new immersive-audio partnership between Kosten and Wilson, with Oxygene as its first project. The team aimed to preserve the balance and tape-echo character of the original stereo mix while letting the album "breathe in three-dimensional space."
"When I created OXYGENE, I was working directly with analogue instruments and tape, and the sound had a particular depth, movement and life of its own. For this anniversary edition, we returned to the original tapes with the aim of preserving that character rather than changing it," says Jarre.
Formats: 180g black vinyl (half-speed mastered and cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios), CD, limited-edition coloured eco-vinyl, digital editions, and a deluxe Blu-ray mediabook with the Atmos mix, a new 5.1 mix, the 2026 stereo remaster and archival material. New liner notes come from Alexis Petridis of The Guardian, with reflections from Kelly Lee Owens and Solomun.
The release also marks an extended partnership between Jarre and BMG covering his catalogue and future work; Jarre is currently in the studio on new music. On October 21 he is Guest of Honour at Amsterdam Dance Event, presenting the sold-out immersive concert OXYGENE & BEYOND at AFAS Live. His book MACHINES: A History of Electronic Music (Thames & Hudson) arrives November 24.
