Interview with The Vlade
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Well… It all started with those sweet serenades of my grandma back in Bulgaria! Her songs and paintings were my first taste of the arts. That, and the music my big brother introduced to me at an young age. If I hadn't picked up the guitar at thirteen, I'd probably be a world-renowned mime. But alas, the rock gods had other plans!
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
When I'm not strumming chords, I'm doodling away as an award-winning cartoonist, full-time designer, illustrator, animator, and children's book author. These keep my creative juices flowing and occasionally inspire a quirky lyric or two.
How long have you been making music?
Since the tender age of thirteen, when I first taught myself to play the guitar. That's more years than I care to admit, but hey, who's counting?
Where are you based and how did that influence your music?
I'm currently rocking out in Vancouver, British Columbia, but my roots run deep in Bulgaria. This cross-continental journey has infused my music with a blend of traditional folk, acoustic sounds, electronic vibes, and hard rock. A musical cocktail, if you will! Cheers!
Tell me about your most memorable shows, if you haven’t played live what is your vision for a live show?
While I haven't graced the stage in a while, my vision for a live show involves a fusion of music and visual art, creating an immersive experience that would leave the audience dazzled and slightly confused — in the best way possible!
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
I've always dreamed of playing at the historic Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. As for uncharted territories, headlining Madison Square Garden with a Bulgarian bagpipe ensemble would be a hoot!
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Picture this: The Vlade opening, followed by a hologram duet with Freddie Mercury, and closing with a jam session alongside David Bowie and a choir of singing llamas. Now that's a show!
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into making music and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
To newcomers: Embrace the chaos, practice like a maniac, and don't be afraid to sound terrible before you sound terrific. To my younger self: Invest in Bitcoin and always carry an extra guitar pick.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
"Coming Home" holds a special place in my heart. It reached the top 20 chart of the Bulgarian National Radio, bridging my past and present in a harmonious embrace.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
"Into Eternity" is a personal favorite to perform, with its ethereal vibes. Fans often ask for "Bring Me to the Light," and who am I to say no?
What is your creative process, and what inspires you to write your music?
My creative process involves my trusty old guitar, a dash of inspiration from everyday life, and the occasional late-night jam session. I let the melodies flow, scribble down lyrics, and voilà — a song is born!
Do you have messages that you like to get across in your music? if so please tell me about them.
Absolutely! My music often explores themes of self-discovery, resilience, and the importance of following one's dreams, no matter the odds. If there’s one lesson that I can teach my kids, it’s — never give up, and never be afraid to follow your dreams.
Do you have any new singles, videos, or albums out that you would like to tell me and your fans about?
Why, yes! My latest album, "Bring Me to The Light," is out now and available as a 'Name Your Price' download. It features a mix of love songs, acoustic sounds, two songs in Bulgarian (one with my Mon’s lyrics), and pop melodies. The videos are on my YouTube channel.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
I'm currently working on new material and planning to bring my music to my fans soon. Stay tuned for upcoming releases!
