Interview with Sound Delivery

What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?

I saw a VHS tape of Deep Purple California Jam with Ritchie Blackmore smashing up his guitars when i was maybe 6 years old expecting a disney movie to play or something. I started imitating Ritchie and smashed my mothers old Mandolin. After that i guess the future was set in stone for me. If i hadnt gone the path of music i would probably work with something that relates to history in some way. Or carpentry.

What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?

I usually think out the song structure and arrangements beforehand so not playing music for a couple of days helps me get my brain in the right zone. But i do let myself relax a couple of days every year also so i dont get too looney.

How long has your band been around?

We formed Sound Delivery in 2023, me Johan and Waldemar have known eachother for a long time and always wanted to play together, our schedules and tours etc never lined up until the summer of 2023. But once we started we all felt it was something worth seriously working on and we are very happy for it.

Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?

We come from a small town called Alingsås, locades about 30minutes from Swedens metal capitol Gothenburg. While Sound Delivery is not a metal band we surely have absorbed something passively from it. The cold winters and the lack of sunlight has a melancholic effect in our songwriting im sure. You’ll notice we dont have many songs in the major keys.

How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?

We wanted something clever and eventually divided that we wanted the word delivery in our bandname, then we thought long until we came up with Sound Delivery as in “sound” safe delivery, and obviously Rock sound.

Tell me about your most memorable shows.

We had a great one last year where we thought noone would show, but then all of the sudden a whole bunge of teens showed up and turned the night into a proper party. The PA and everything was severely lacking but noone cared and everyone had a good time. The younger generation has a fine taste in music.

What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?

Gothenburg has sadly closed so many of the legendary venues in recent years, but before the formation of Sound Delivery i played a couple of times at the legendary rock club Sticky Fingers. That was a fantastic venue with great sound. Shame its gone now.

If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?

Maybe Queen with a resurrected Freddie Mercury, Rainbow during its Rising lineup, along with Electric Sun from their 1985 lineup. Severely unknown era of Uli Jon Roth which deserves more recognition.

What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?

Just hang in there and have fun. Good music will eventually be heard by people who search for it.

If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?

Practice piano a little more, it is very useful for writing songs.

Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?

We have some now ones in the pipeline that i love, but from our debut album i would say the song How Long is great fun. It really summarizes everything i love about Sound Delivery, the big power trio sound with whacky tempochanges. All great fun.

Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?

Basically the same as the question above. We have gotten some requests to debut Voices from the sky, which obviously is quite demanding on the vocals for myself, we will see what the future brings.

What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?

We love to work fast and spontaneous. If we dont feel like we’re in the zone when we write a song, we try another riff or song idea until we all get excited. Rehearsals are a little more focused, but we all enjoy the rehearsal process and add some exciting live arrangements to the tunes.

What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?

I try to avoid cliches with lyrics, but sometimes its fun to really lean into cliches too. I want the lyrics to be somewhat clever and to tell a story with some free interpretation for those who listen to the song. Some years ago my lyrics weren't that great, i’d like to think i’ve grown better writing lyrics with Sound Delivery.

Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?

No, not yet atleast haha! We all have the same goal so really any obstacle or disagreement we can spot before it becomes an issue and talk it out before any problems arise.

What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?

We will release a series of singles this year, try to please the spotify algorithmic overlords and all that stuff. We will also perform live more which we are really excited for.
