Interview with Soleil River Nation

What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?

My mother, who didn't have the opportunity to pursue music in her youth, is my inspiration. Although she missed her chance, she's dedicated to guiding me to forge my own path. She has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the arts and music. Maybe a music teacher!

What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?

I'm fond of drawing and painting, as well as staying physically active. I engage in various activities like capoeira, gymnastics, ice skating, and numerous dance styles, from ballroom to breakdancing, which aid in maintaining my focus.

How long have you been making music?

I began teaching myself piano at the age of 5, picked up the trumpet 3 years ago when I was 7, and have been singing for as long as I remember discovering my voice. Currently, I am 10 years old.

Where are you based and how did that influence your music?

In Miami Beach, Florida, there exists a lively community filled with musicians and arts organizations that offer substantial support.

Tell me about your most memorable shows, if you haven’t played live what is your vision for a live show?

Throughout my life, I've had numerous performances, but the standout moment was at my elementary school when I spontaneously performed my original song "Small Girl in a Big World" before its official release. The entire school joined in, transforming it into an unforgettable chorus and creating a new, amazing version of the song. Even months later, the school community continues to sing and hum it, boosting my local fame. That experience was truly incredible!

What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?

In Miami, FL, the Miami Girls Rock Camp hosts a monthly open mic event for young musicians like me. It's an incredibly fun and supportive experience.

If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?

I'm a huge fan of Lana Del Rey, Olivia Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift, so having them on the lineup would be a dream come true!

What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into making music and some advice that you would give to your younger self?

No matter how small you feel, GO BIG!!!!

Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?

Small Girl in a Big World because at some point everyone has felt snubbed, ignored and kept aside like a small girl in a world full of older, bigger people who think they know better.

Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?

Small Girl in a Big World because it’s fresh sound and my own song

What is your creative process, and what inspires you to write your music?

I constantly immerse myself in music to identify what captures my interest. My songwriting often coincides with other creative activities, such as drawing or playing instruments like the piano and trumpet. Additionally, collaborating with talented musicians is crucial for nurturing my inspiration.

Do you have messages that you like to get across in your music? if so please tell me about them.

I believe that inspiration is all around us, and it's essential to remain open to receiving it. It's also important to be prepared to record or jot down these inspirations, as they can come easily but disappear just as quickly.

Do you have any new singles, videos, or albums out that you would like to tell me and your fans about?

Released on Feb. 29, 2024 is my Debut Single -

What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?

I aim to gain recognition as a genuine musician and, hopefully, secure a Grammy award someday.

How can your fans best keep up to date with you, any socials you want people to check out?
