Interview with Sheena Legrand
What has been inspiring you lately?
My inspirations come from all parts of my life, and at seemingly random moments. Sometimes it’s an engaging conversation while out on a stroll with my family that lights me up and drives me towards my instruments. Other times it’s a new artist I’ve been introduced to (most recently, it was Tennyson King who had my partner and I daydreaming about video shoot ideas after seeing one of his music videos. We’re working on a video project together right now, so it’s perfect timing to be encouraged by what other artists are putting out). Often times, when I’ve got the space to create but need to light a spark, I’ll listen through my old voice memos. I love when I’ve been able to capture those rare channeled moments of musical bliss on a voice memo that I can then work with at a later time. When I listen back with fresh ears, it takes me down a whole new path of discovery, and it’s fun to work with my creative instincts in this way. Another rule of thumb for me - if I sit down to write and nothing’s flowing within the first 15 min, I tend to leave it and come back another time.
Do you have any new singles, videos, or albums out that you would like to tell me and your fans about?
My latest single “Green Light” is out now on all platforms. It was written and produced with local Winnipeg musician/producer Jonny Kirouac, who is an incredible talent. We started out with some ideas from a sync licensing course I was taking, and what came from it was so much more than I expected. It grew into an anthem about letting go of what’s not meant for us, so we can make space for what is. For me, it really captured the sentiment that if you’re looking for the universe to give you a green light in your life, chances are you have to grant that from within yourself first. I also love the song because of how my vocals completely transformed during the creative process.
Learning to sing the chorus especially has helped me project in a brand new way. On top of all that, I’m playing with live looping during my performances, and this song really lends well to that process. It’s been a lot of fun to explore.
Do you have anything else that you would like to talk about or promote?
When I’m not playing music and being a mom, I’m a certified health and life coach! This incredibly meaningful work grew naturally alongside my career in music, and now I see these paths as two sides of the same coin. If someone resonates with my music, they will likely vibe with my coaching style, my approach to life, and we may even share a history of some of the same struggles - given I’ve been quite vulnerable in my music. People can find me through my website if they’re interested in learning more about my coaching programs, and they can check out my TEDx Talk to hear my story of overcoming an autoimmune condition. It can be found on YouTube under my previous name, Sheena Grobb.
How can your fans best keep up to date with you, any socials you want people to check out?
My mailing list through my website is always my #1 choice for fan connection. Folks can also follow me on IG and FB, and subscribe to my YouTube Channel! I’m beginning to share a bit more on TikTok and Twitter. These days, I go LIVE each week on my FB Band Page for something I call “Sunday Songwriting Sessions” at 7pm Central. I share a song I’ve been thinking about or working on, and it’s been a fun way for me to create content, share upcoming events, and get practice time in as a new mom. People can like, comment, ask questions, and interact with me there.
