Interview with PARADISE IN FLAMES
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Hello everyone. I’m Opus Mortis, Paradise in Flames vocal, and I got into music (and art at all) when I was very young, starting singing when I was something like 3 years old even I never did classes. Since that I’m still listening, singing and in last times, being a visual artist producing logos for some bands. And also, of course, I’m being the make-up and costume designer on my band.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I love the death and I realized it’s one of my hugest hyper-focusing in life, so I love walking in cemeteries, read books siting over graves, as the same I love walking forests, doing rituals and things like that. I started a web blog (https://opusmortis.blogspot.com/) where I write something about my life in band and other things. I like read and study too.
How long has your band been around?
22 years long. But I’ve been in since 2018 when I first recorded a song, Has Never Seen a World Without Wars.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
We have has the privilege of living in close proximity to Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, a region known for being the birthplace of iconic extreme metal bands such as Sepultura and Sarcófago, among many others. This proximity has had a profound influence on us from a young age and has been a significant part of our journey within the metal music scene.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
We were thinking of a strong name in the band during a reunion in the early days while playing the Disincarnate's album on the song Stench of Paradise, and in the middle of the discussion, the sound was heard to say, "Paradise in Flames." Instantly, it resonated with all of us, and without hesitation, we knew it was the perfect name for our band.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
I usually say “the best show was the last one”. I loved playing around Europe together Batushka and many other amazing band, as I love so much been playing around Brazil, Argentina. And I would love to play all around the entire world. My very special gigs was: in Rome side by side I Am Morbid and Batushka, realizing a metal dream; in Abril Pro Rock around Brazilian northeast lands where I love so much. Such a beautiful place and nice people; in Zárate, Argentina, in Furia Metal Fest, it was a huge and amazing public that I loved so much and I can’t see the time to come back.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
Certainly! Here's a refined version of your answer:
I've had incredible experiences performing in different parts of the world. From the vibrant energy of Brazilian North and Northeast to the diverse crowds of Europe, every show has been unique. Playing in our home state, especially in Belo Horizonte, holds a special place in my heart. The warmth and enthusiasm of the audiences in Argentina have always made those performances memorable. As for my 'black metal princess dream' (laughs), it would be a dream come true to play at the Inferno Metal Festival. Of course, performing at iconic festivals like Wacken and Rock in Rio is also on my bucket list. Each stage offers its own magic, and I'm grateful for every opportunity to share my music with passionate fans.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Your vision for a festival sounds epic! Here's a polished version of your statement:
I envision a massive festival featuring a diverse lineup of bands, including heavyweights like Behemoth, Batushka, Rotting Christ, and many more. It would be a celebration of the rich tapestry of metal music, bringing together different sub-genres and cultures under one roof. The atmosphere would be fantastic, with fans from all over the world uniting to revel in the power of metal. It's a dream I hope to turn into reality one day.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Your message of perseverance and determination is inspiring! Here's a polished version of your statement:
Never give up on your dreams. I know it's not easy, but with unwavering dedication and hard work, dreams can become reality. Invest your time and effort wisely, and in today's world, harness the power of social media to your advantage. It's a tool that can amplify your voice and help you reach new heights. Keep pushing forward, and remember that every step you take brings you closer to your aspirations.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
Never change your dream for anyone. Never stop singing, never stop painting and drawing. Believe only in yourself.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Your explanation of "The Way to The Pentagram" is profound and insightful. Here's a refined version of your statement:
One of the most significant song for me is 'The Way to The Pentagram.' It encapsulates a profound philosophy that resonates deeply with me. It emphasizes the journey within oneself to discover one's own truth, rather than seeking answers from external sources like religions or outside influences. I adhere to the philosophy that 'Every man and every woman is a star,' meaning that each of us possesses our own inner light and the answers to our questions lie within us. This song embodies that journey inward, guiding us toward our own personal enlightenment and empowerment.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
My favorite songs right now are The Way to The Pentagram and I Feel The Plague. The most requested are Bringer of Disease, Last Breath and Dancer of The Mist.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
Your description of your band's creative process and inspirations is intriguing. Here's a refined version of your statement:
Our creative process is fluid, often evolving spontaneously due to the demands of our jobs. Sometimes, ideas come to us seemingly out of nowhere and we record them whenever inspiration strikes. Other times, one of us creates a masterpiece seemingly overnight. What inspires us most is the human mind and its perpetual questioning. We're drawn to exploring themes related to religious dogma and philosophical concepts that challenge closed-mindedness. These topics fuel our creativity and drive us to create music that provokes thought and introspection.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Think for yourself, live for yourself, take care of what you believe, always question. Some kind of existentialism is necessary but never be lost on it and never permit nobody to control you.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
We try to hold a meeting sometimes to point out important issues and try to solve conflicts. We’re humans so it’s completely normal to have disagreements. Talking and trying to solve is the best thing to make a group survive, is the basis of teamwork.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Your announcement about your upcoming album release and tour with Batushka is exciting! Here's a refined version of your statement:
We're thrilled to announce the release of our new album, 'Blindness,' on June 14th. I'm personally filled with love for this record, and I can't wait for you all to hear it. In August, we'll be hitting the road with Batushka for a tour here in Brazil, and we have more exciting news on the way. Be sure to stay updated by following us on social media. See you soon on the road! Thank you all very much for your support.
