Interview with Marïe Pratt

What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?

I’ve been passionate about music since I was a child, inspired by growing up playing oboe in a orquestra and studying music. Music has always been my outlet for self-expression and connection. I love storytelling and share the learnings I take from my life’s experiences. I am also a lawyer. I can’t think about what would I be doing today if I weren’t in music, ‘cause I worked as a lawyer for some years but at the end of the day I realized I can’t live without creativity.

What do you like to do when you are not playing music, and how does that influence your creativity?

When I’m not making music, I love roller skating, and I actually included it in my latest music video for the song Talk to Me. You can watch it on YouTube. Besides that, I enjoy spending time with my loved ones. Lastly, I believe the most important thing for writing a good song is to let life happen—allow things to unfold naturally. These experiences, whether positive or negative, always offer valuable lessons. They recharge me and often spark new ideas, helping me craft lyrics and melodies that reflect the emotions and stories around me.

How long have you been making music?

All my life. I’ve been performing for over 10 years, but I began composing even earlier. Music has been my companion and career for as long as I can remember. My shower has witnessed tons of concerts hahaha!

Where are you based and how did that influence your music?

I’m based between the vibrant Barcelona and the crystal-clear water of Costa Brava. Barcelona is a city rich with artistic inspiration and diverse musical influences. Being surrounded by the Mediterranean’s beauty (Costa Brava) and vibrant urban culture (Barcelona) gives my sound a unique blend of warmth, rhythm, and soul.

Tell me about your most memorable shows, if you haven’t played live what is your vision for a live show?

One of my most memorable shows was at the Barcelona International Jazz Festival—I loved sharing my music with an audience that was so open and enthusiastic. I especially enjoy playing at festivals, and this year I also performed at Festival Les Nits de Barcelona (translated from Catalan to English as Barcelona’s Nights Fest). It’s an incredible experience to influence the atmosphere of a festival with your music, your style, and your ideals. My vision for live shows is always the same: to create an unforgettable and emotional journey for the audience—one filled with connection, passion, and soul. To sum it up in just one word: magic. This year, my goal is to perform at a festival outside Spain—perhaps in the Netherlands, the UK, or Germany.

What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?

I love intimate venues that allow for a deep connection with the audience. A dream venue for me would be the Royal Albert Hall in London or the Montreux Jazz Festival stage.

If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?

No doubt: Alicia Keys and Jessie J. They are my main influence. John Mayer on the guitar! And Adam Smiley on the drums! I also love artists like Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Teddy Swims, Adam Levine, Chris Martin, Lizzo, JoJo, Anie Tracy, Riley, Meghan Trainor, Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande, Tori Kelly, MaKenzie, Neyo, Brooke Simpson, Therese Curatolo, Maren Morris, Debbi Dawson, Cynthia Erivo, Ciara, Sam Smith, Muni Long, JP Saxe, H.E.R., etc. Their energy and artistry are truly inspiring.

What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into making music and some advice that you would give to your younger self?

To new musicians: Be authentic and persistent. The world needs your unique voice.

To my younger self: Trust your journey ‘cause some days are really tough, and don’t be afraid to take risks—it’s where the magic happens.

Of your songs, which one means the most to you and why?

“E.H.F.A.R” holds a special place in my heart. Everything Happens For a Reason is a mantra that brings me peace during certain moments in life. I believe it’s a great motto to live by. Additionally, the lyrics of the song carry a powerful message I learned around the age of 25—something I wish someone had told me years earlier: the importance of enjoying the process rather than just focusing on the outcome. It’s about realizing that the journey itself, which takes up most of your time, is also part of your life.

“Love acoustic” and “Talk to Me” are also very important songs to me because they address psychological abuse and the lack of emotional responsibility in relationships. Love talks about seeking a relationship where you can be yourself and feel free, while Talk to Me aims to be the nightmare of "ghosts"—people who disappear without explanation, a behavior that causes significant emotional harm to the other person. Unfortunately, these two types of relationships are becoming more common in our society and cannot be validated as acceptable.

Which songs are your favorite to play, and which get requested the most?

Oh, great question—thank you! My favourite songs to play during shows are “E.H.F.A.R.” and “Love Acoustic” ‘cause I love their meaning and rhythm. About requests, many people love “E.H.F.A.R.” too and Don’t, especially my audience in the U.S., where it’s the most requested track. They’ve told me they enjoy the energy it gives them, its positive message, and the interactive element in the final part with the claps, which makes the performance even more engaging and fun for everyone.

What is your creative process, and what inspires you to write your music?

My creative process starts with an emotion or story that resonates deeply. I have something to say. I let the melody flow organically and layer it with lyrics that reflect authenticity. Personal experiences, relationships, learnings of those experiences, and even the beauty of everyday life inspire me.

Do you have messages that you like to get across in your music? If so, please tell me about them.

Absolutely! This is the main reason I make music—apart from the fact that it brings me so much joy, of course. My aim is to give light, light and more light! I would love to promote emotional connection, healing, and female empowerment through my songs. I want listeners to feel seen and understood, encouraging them to embrace their emotions and celebrate their uniqueness. I also hope to give them good vibes, a boost of positive energy during life’s low moments, and a sense of being truly understood. Finally, I share my learnings in case they can help anyone avoid spending too much time feeling lost in darkness until they receive some message or understanding that allows them to break free. I would love to help bring people out of that darkness and give them light.

Do you have any new singles, videos, or albums out that you would like to tell me and your fans about?

Yes! My latest single, Talk to Me, is out now. It’s an R&B-Funky track that speaks directly to survivors of ghosting, turning pain into courage. The lyrics contain what, for me, was the philosopher's stone to healing: understanding that the ghost’s behavior has NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU. Additionally, I’m currently working on a new song featuring an artist from San Francisco. This track will be called “I’m done” and it is particularly meaningful as it marks the closing of a chapter in my songwriting journey. Stay tuned for more!

What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?

I’m working on new music that blends R&B, Soul, and Funk even further. I’m also planning a tour across Europe to bring my music to more people and create unforgettable live experiences!
