Interview with J0VANNA

What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?

●   My journey into music began with my awesome Dad, who was always the 'life of the party' with his singing. As I grew up, my mom recognized my potential and enrolled me in a performing arts school. There, I received voice lessons and even joined a kids rockband, which really affirmed my love for music. Had music not been my path, I'd still be immersed in the creative world, exploring beauty school since I love to work with hair and makeup or possibly even doing therapeutic work with children, or both!

What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?

●   Outside of music, I enjoy nature and meditation, spaces where silence speaks volumes and inspiration flows freely. Listening to music also plays a role, sparking new ideas for lyrics and melodies that mirror my experiences. I also think that creative writing opens a gateway to explore various narratives and emotions, adding layers of depth and perspective to my songwriting.

How long have you been making music?

●   I’ve been making music since the age of 14. Back then, I was penning ballads about heartbreak like a seasoned soul, despite never actually having my heart broken. What can I say! It was my vivid and expansive imagination that drove me to write such songs.

Where are you based and how did that influence your music?

●   I’m from South Florida but the local music scene didn’t really shape my sound or how I write. Instead, it was the Salsa rhythms of Marc Anthony, a favorite artist of my dad's, that initially sparked my musical curiosity. That early exposure made me want to broaden my horizons, pushing me to discover and fall in love with a wide range of genres, from rock and soul to blues and R&B. Each new style I explored added a layer to my musical and creative identity.

Tell me about your most memorable shows, if you haven’t played live what is your vision for a live show?

●   My most unforgettable performance took place at an outdoor mall, where I had the courage to sing 'Purple Rain.' Which are really big shoes to fill because hello? It’s Prince! He is a 90's pop icon! As the first notes echoed out, a crowd began to gather, forming a circle around me. There they were, watching, recording, and even joining in to sing along. In that moment, surrounded by a chorus of voices under the open night sky, everything felt magical. It remains one of my favorite moments on stage to this day! I’ve had other performances in my life but those can’t compete with this one! It showcases the ability of what live music can do,build connections and cast a spell over us all.

What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?

●   My favorite venue so far has to be this cozy little kava spot called Twisted Roots Kava. Its earthy and spiritual vibe makes every performance there feel intimate and special. However, there are still so many iconic venues in Florida on my wishlist like Blue Jeans Blue and Ball & Chain.

If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?

●   Oh gosh, I would say James Arthur and Demi Lovato. That would be a dream come true forme! I think I would be in heaven at this point. They are the reason as to why I pursued my career! They inspired me to be who I am vocally and creatively when it comes to my songwriting.

What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into making music and some advice that you would give to your younger self?

●   For those just starting out in music, my advice is to work hard and always push forward. Remember to take everything with a grain of salt, and most importantly, be you. Please, do not change for anyone because the right people will always show up and support your music. I know it can be hard right now because there  are so many singers out there getting noticed for their craft and going viral. But just know your time will come and you will SHINE. To my younger self, it is pretty simple and straightforward, I’d say not to be too hard on yourself.

Out of all of your songs, which one means the most to you and why?

●   If I'm being completely honest, picking a favorite among my songs feels impossible. I hold each one close to my heart for different reasons; they all represent various moments in my life. The love I share for the songs I have released so far are equally matched because they all come from a special place.

Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?

●    I absolutely love performing my own songs live, but if there's one cover that energizes me, it's Janis Joplin's 'Me and Bobby McGee.' There's a magic in that song that just revives my soul every single time.

What is your creative process, and what inspires you to write your music?

●   My creative process is all about going with the flow of the sudden inspiration I get from time to time, which can come from anything I experience in my surroundings or within myself. When something truly captivates me, it ignites this little spark of  wanting to start writing the music before I lose it. I usually have a clear vision of    the sound and feel I'm aiming for right from the beginning. Once I have the initial concept, I prepare before I head into the studio, where I can officially work on bringing the full vision of the song to life, perfecting it along the way.

Do you have messages that you like to get across in your music? If so, please tell me about them.

●    The heart of my music lies in its power to inspire and support listeners on their journey through life. My goal is to create songs that not only entertain but also offer a sense of renewal and visibility. I believe that music can reach deep and resonate, and make each person who listens to it feel seen and understood. This is the message I strive to make through every note I sing and lyrics I write.

Do you have any new singles, videos, or albums out that you would like to tell me and your fans about?

●   I recently released a new track called 'BOYS AIN'T SH!T' on March 8th, aligning with International Women’s Day. The song is inspired by my observation of seeing women who I have known or seen being treated poorly by someone when it comes to a relationship and has been undervalued. Which it eventually channels into a narrative of self-discovery and empowerment. Additionally, I'm excited to share that I'll soon return to the studio for my fifth single, which will   offer a completely new direction from my latest release.

What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?

●   Looking ahead, I'm fully committed to the creative cycle of writing, recording, releasing, promoting, and, fingers crossed, getting back on stage to perform. My vision extends beyond just sharing my music; I aim to cultivate a community where my music resonates deeply and fosters connections. I’m optimistic that it will be filled with new opportunities that will come my way.

How can your fans best keep up to date with you, any socials you want people to check out?

●   To stay updated and explore deeper into my musical journey, my fans and others can find me across all major social media platforms. Just search for ‘@xjovnnamusicx’ or simply ‘J0VANNA’ to connect and join my growing community. I’m everywhere you are, ready to share my music and engage.
