Interview with INSURRECTION
Hey, thank you for coming back for another interview!Thank you for having us! We have been busy since the last time we were with you.
What is new since the last interview?Since the last interview, we have written and recorded a new album entitled Obsolescence, which will be released on September 13th, 2024. It will be our 5th album in our over 20-year existence, and it features some of our heaviest work yet. There is a unique, energetic sound to this album that will be both familiar to long-time fans, but also fresh and exciting in its use of new ideas and styles.
We have also welcomed 2 new members: Jay on drums and Mike on guitar. This infusion of new blood, in combination with 2 founding members (Stef and Mart) and a long-time member (Fuzz), has resulted in a unique sound and combination of influences and styles. This can be heard in the new material, and will surely translate as writing begins for the NEXT new album.
What has been inspiring you lately? One big factor that is inspiring and pushing us now is the pent-up energy we have since Covid. The new album was mostly written during that time, and while it was a healthy way to cope and get through hard times, we were sitting on our hands waiting to get this out. The last two years have been focused on getting it recorded, but also getting back on stage. Our live show is one of our biggest strengths, and being able to reconnect with our fans has been cathartic. We have been playing around Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia this year to not only promote new material, but to re-energize those fans who have supported us for years.
Do you have any new singles, videos, or albums out that you would like to tell me and your fans about? In promotion of our new album “Obsolescence”, we have released some singles that we think show off the variety of styles that make this album unique.
One of those singles is “Bless the Machine”. This song is affectionately known as our “At the Gates playing Castlevania” song. It consists of fast and technical guitar playing, pulverizing drums, and insightful lyrics that punch you in the face. The song is the conclusion to “The New Uprising” trilogy found within the album and also is the conclusion of the album.
“Obsession” is our next release, a chaotic and brutal piece of music that grinds against some of the groovy, melodic songs on the album. This song is yet another step of us experimenting with whatever we want and being comfortable doing so.
Finally, “The Gathering” is our release that includes a music video. This song is already one of our favorite songs to play live and sets the tone for the rest of the album. The song itself describes the sense of community and acceptance that is found within the metal community, which can be felt in the video as our loyal tribe headbangs and causes general chaos as a community. I dare you not to headbang to it…
Do you have anything else that you would like to talk about or promote? For those who are not familiar with us, Insurrection put an emphasis on language in our music. Specifically, the band writes in both French and English. Our album names, many of our song names, and even the band’s name can be both French and English. Lyrically we jump between both, and we make an effort to represent our language use evenly.
