Interview with Flavia Abadía
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
I’ve loved music as long as I could remember. Some of my favorite early memories include music. I’ve been singing, dancing and acting since I was young and it’s been a childhood dream. Creating music makes me feel happy and connected. It’s also a way of honoring myself and my dreams.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I am a multi hyphenate, multi passionate person so I do a lot of things. I love wellness, dance, the ballroom community, DJing and real estate. I’m exposed to many different people from different backgrounds and walks of life. I learn from everyone and feel inspired by people’s creativity, passion and drive. I can’t necessarily describe it. I think there’s so much beauty in people’s stories and ways of being!
How long have you been making music?
I’ve been making music for fun most of my life. I’ve been recording music in a studio since 2016.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
I’m based in Toronto, Canada. My mother is Colombian, my father is French-Canadian, I was born in France and went to French schools growing up in France, Montreal and the greater Toronto area. My upbringing and background definitely influences my music. I also have a lot of multicultural and Egyptian friends so Arab scales and different sounds I connect with and can dance to definitely influence me. You can hear it in my music from my album “Crossover” and “Hacia La Luz”.
Tell me about your most memorable shows, if you haven’t played live what is your vision for a live show?
I have a few! Djing and performing my original music at an International Women’s Day #PoweredByFemaleFans game for the Toronto Raptors was very memorable! I’ve also DJed for TMU’s Welcome/ Orientation week which is always a nice big beautiful party.
Other memorable shows include DJing in Barcelona, I LOVE the crowd there. They have so much energy!!! It was also very memorable DJing and playing my original music at Mouv, a radio station in Paris that broadcasts all over France.Any event filled with great energy, where I can blend DJing and my original music makes me feel so connected, happy and fulfilled!
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
The venue I definitely want to play is a Festival stage at Tomorrowland in Belgium!!
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Anitta, Karol G, Becky G are the top 3 that come to mind as artists. As a DJ I would love to play with Major Lazer, Diplo, Steve Aoki and David Guetta. They blend Electronic, Latin and World music so well!
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into making music and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
For someone getting into music I would say explore, be creative, try new things, work with different people and see what works for you. It may take a little bit to figure it out and that’s ok. I would also say, learn as much as you can about the music business!! It will help you a lot throughout your journey.
Also to be adaptable but always remain true to yourself.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Oufff…. I don’t know if there’s one that means the most to me. I really love my music and what I create. Each song is different and represents a different part of who I am or an artistic expression.
Right now I’m playing “MALA”, “TEN CUIDAO”, “PELIGROSA” and “YNQF” a lot. Which one is your favorite? Let me know on socials :D!
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
I have so many favorites!! It depends on the mood! I get requested “Trumpets (Remix)” a lot because it’s one of my most popular music videos. We filmed that one in Havana, Cuba. That was a beautiful experience!
What is your creative process, and what inspires you to write your music?
I like creating the beat and writing in the studio. I feel like it’s almost a spiritual thing. I feel so connected and happy creating! I love creating with other people, exchanging ideas and making something great!
There are so many things that inspire me, life itself is a giant inspiration!
Do you have messages that you like to get across in your music, if so please tell me about them?
I generally come from an empowered point of view from someone who knows themselves and loves themselves. I would say that and the fact that my songs are danceable in some way are the constant threads in my music
All the topics are different, it might be about dancing, wanting to escape for a little bit, figuring someone out, being in love, being grateful, about various relationship dynamics and more.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
“MALA” is out now, I’m filming a lot of music videos and I’m soon releasing my third album “SALVAJE” with great songs! I’m very excited!!
One of the songs coming out has someone you’ve heard before if you’ve listened to Beyonce’s latest Renaissance album or been to her tour ;). STAY TUNNED!!
How can your fans best keep up to date with you, any socials you want people to check out?
