Interview with DECAIR
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Speaking purely for myself (Luka), my earliest point of getting into music was probably when American idiot by Green day came out. That was the first thing that really pulled me in and eventually led me all the way to hardcore and metal. The thing that actually made me seriously want to be in an aggressive band was hearing The Dillinger Escape Plan for the first time.
If I hadn't gotten into music I'd probably have the same day job I have now, but maybe I'd be doing more video production stuff on the side.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
Work out, run, hang out with people, listen to a lot of music. I think anything that happens in your life influences you musical output in some way. I wish I had more time to be bored, that usually fuels creativity.
How long has your band been around? Also, please tell me about the dynamic of the band of what brought you all together.
The band's been around for a while, but I could say it properly started sometime in late 2019 when we had a stable lineup.
Our dynamic has changed a lot over time. When the band started we certainly had trouble combining our completely disperate influences (and to a point we still do) into something cohesive. But when it works, we tend to produce something that is unique to us and doesn't just sound like another band. It's also gotten way more collaborative over time.
Where are you based and how did that influence your music?
We're basednin Ljubljana, Slovenia. I can't say that reallyninfluenced our music that much. Idon't think our influences are all that local to us.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
It means Decay in Portogese but we prounounce it differently. We needed a name and this one stuck. Might be a bit late to change it.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
Opening for Portrayal of guilt was great. They're a big influence for me and it was my first taste of playing a show with a band that I really look up to.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
Gala Hala was an great show. Mostovna is great, the vibe is there and the sound slaps.
I think we'd all really like to play Kino Šiška. Other than that, we'd play any venue that'll have us.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Oh man that’s tough. Again, just speaking for myself. Let's say it’s a club show. Converge would headline, Better lovers before them, then there would be END and we'd open.
Or maybe us playing direct support for any of the bands mentioned. Or Gojira, that'd be tight.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
I don't think we're qualified to give any advice to others. To my younger self, or actually our current selves; don't try to showcase everything you kind of do.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Of the ones that are out now, probably Glasscase or Fuck it, we ball. They stem from an existential crisis I had. That being said, there's unreleased song that mean a lot more.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
There's an as of yet unreleased song that we end our shows with thats always the highlight of the set. It shoul be announced relatively soon.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
Thet entirely depends on the song. Sometimes someone will bring in a song that's pretty much done and we'll just tweak it, while other times we'll have just a skeleton and work on it bit by bit. Then again other times someone might bring in an idea that the others don't fully vibe with so we mess with it until we have something we all mostly agree on.
I don't think there's a thing that inspires us. We like doing it and so we do it.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
We don't have an agenda.
Do you have any new singles, videos, or albums out that you would like to tell me and your fans about?
GlassCase and Fuck it, we ball have been out for a bit and there should be some new announcements soon.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Our first full length album will be announced shortly.
