Interview with Damon Head of Deadaudiosaints
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today? There was always music around at home, I guess my parents were into a lot of the music that would become a lot of my favourite bands and stuff, I remember Kerrang! TV being played at home and 'discovering' other band's as well as those that my parents were listening to. I got to see a lot of my favourite bands at a really young age as well thanks to my parents, I think that's where I really got into music was going to gigs and seeing bands live.I would either be playing FIFA professionally or just playing FIFA What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?I'm pretty boring be honest haha I don't do too much, I spend time with my girlfriend, get frustrated watching Leeds United, go to the gym which is where I discover most of my 'new' music listening to playlists while I'm there which is where I sometimes get inspired to write, hearing something that you like and you want to do something similar but with your own spin. How long has your band been around? We aren’t a super new band but at the same time I think our material and the songs we put together keep everything as fresh as if we were. Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music? We're all from a small town called Goole in Yorkshire, I'm not too sure Goole influenced our music but I guess when we all started gigging there was a little bit of a scene in Goole, there were a few pub type venues and there was always local bands playing. How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you? You'd have to ask Danny or Corey, it was already in place when I joined haha I always thought it was a cool name though, I always thought they were in the same kind of style as innerpartysystem and Box Car Racer, which I also think are pretty cool Tell me about your most memorable shows.I think one of our best shows was when we played one of the Jubilee Nights upstairs at the Camden Barfly back in the day. We went on pretty late so I think the people there had had a few drinks so when we played they were pretty up for it. I think we played well and the people there were really reseptive and it was a great night. I think the person doing the lighting that evening also had a good time, so much strobe light haha What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already? We've been fortunate enough to play some really cool venues over the years. Rescue Rooms in Nottingham we played somewhat recently which was great, we were main support for JD and the FDCs which was really awesome, it's a proper venue! If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
It'd have to be some sort of 'Family Values x Summer Sanitarium 2003' mash up. Metallica, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Deftones, Incubus... we'd have to open so we're out of the way and get on with watching it haha
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
You always need that piece of equipment, don't let anyone talk you out of buying it!Advice for my younger self - Do It!!!
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?Don't have that guy as your manager... that guy... don't have him as manager! Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Probably 'Forever', it was the first song I wrote with the guys and it opened some doors for us, it premiered on Jeff Henry’s Lovers are Lunatics Clothing website which Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach was a huge collaborative part of and led to us hanging out with him on a few occasions, which was cool. It was a great time for the band back then.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?'Crucify' from our upcoming EP is a favourite to play. It's super busy on the drums and the second half of the chorus is like two beats at the same time.As for most requested, we covered 'Dragula' by Rob Zombie for a while and then kept getting asked to play it once we stopped playing it so probably 'Dragula' hahaWhat is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
It varies from song to song. Some can start as someone brings an idea in and we all jam on it and it develops from there, some are pretty much full songs and presented to the group, others could be one or two of us working together and coming up with something, there really is no formula for us.The inspiration can come from a number of things, from listening to music or watching a film and liking a certain musical element and sort of borrowing from that and coming up with something completely new.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Again this would be more for Danny to answer as he writes most of the lyrics but I think he just writes about his own experiences and feelings and shows that people aren't alone... I could be completely wrong though with the message haha
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Absolutely we do haha Danny and Corey are brothers so you can imagine how that is. It's usually over nothing so doesn't take long to get over it.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Our new EP 'To Whom It May Concern...' is out May 3rd and we'll be gigging a lot later this year once people have had a chance to digest it. Head to deadaudiosaints.com to keep an eye
