Interview with Belle Lundon

What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?

My interest for music started in church at two years old. I loved singing in church as a child; I was excited to go every Sunday and perform. In my hometown of New Orleans, Aaron Neville stopped by my kindergarten class to sing us a song. He invited me on the piano chair next to him as he sang. I was so inspired to sing like him, and I knew that I wanted to be a singer then. Growing up I used to watch Sesame Street, and when Patti LaBelle sung about the letter “X”, I grew even more passionate about singing. By the time, Micheal Jackson’s History album was released, there was no going back for me. I knew music was a part of my soul!

In middle school, I joined the show choir. I remember I was always scolded by my music teacher because I was the only singer that would looked towards the audience as I sung. Because of this, she ordered all the students to keep their eyes on the sheet music in order to be congruent & not be “distracting”. Even then, I loved the art of performance and connecting with an audience.

I began to learn on my own how to write songs and think of melodies; this helped me improve as an artist. If I were not doing music, I’d work with children in some capacity. I love children because their innocence leaves room for the imagination. I never want to lose my ability to create and imagine!

What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?

I love to act in theater, film and television. I studied acting in college, and I have had the opportunity to work in the entertainment industry. My most recent work is called, Other Side of Infinity, which will premiere in the Cannes Film Festival in May! I feel acting is very similar to music. With both fields, you must fully be alive and be able to connect with your audience.

How long have you been making music?

I have been making music forever! I started recording my songs for the past six years. However, I’ve been songwriting since I was in elementary school.

Where are you based and how did that influence your music?

I was born in New Orleans and was heavily influenced by live performances as well as live instrumentation. I grew up walking through the French Quarters and constantly admiring the street performers. When I moved to Houston, I was introduced to more hard hitting bass sounds which I incorporate in my music now. And of course, I enjoy the chopped and screwed music culture of the south.

Tell me about your most memorable shows, if you haven’t played live what is your vision for a live show?

My most memorable show was performing on the world famous Apollo stage in Harlem, New York. A gospel song I wrote was nominated and I was flown out by Apollo, where a camera crew followed me around for a week as I prepared to perform, He Wants It All by Forever Jones. There was a man who goes by the name, “Mr. Apollo”, who knew the history of Apollo Theater very well. I will forever be grateful for that memorable experience. The show was called, “Apollo: Making A Star”, and the series can be viewed on YouTube’s platform.

What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?

My favorite venue to play at has been House of Blues Houston. It’s a magical space that looks very bohemian, upon entering the venue. My dream stage to perform would be at the Grammys. That stage is seen all over the world and would be the ultimate dream come true!

If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?

It would all of the icons of today. Just to be able to be a part of that line up, would inspire me for the rest of my life!

What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into making music and some advice that you would give to your younger self?

I would tell that person to make music for yourself first. When I write music, it comes from my soul and not because of any trend I follow. I would also tell them to fall in love with listening to your own music. After all, how can you expect others to love your sound if you are not passionate about your own music? The only advice I would give to my younger self would be to spend more time in the recording booth and to spend your time wisely. I wished I would have recorded more songs earlier in life.

Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?

My Soul to Keep means the most to me because it was one of the first songs I ever recorded. Even to this day, when I sing it, my emotions surface because my lyrics mean so much to me. Also, I love hearing from my supporters on how much the song resonates with them.

Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?

My upbeat tempo songs are my favorite to play because I love to dance when I sing. People always request my most recent song release called Space Cadet. I look forward to seeing the response I get once the remix to Space Cadet is released.

What is your creative process, and what inspires you to write your music?

It depends. Sometimes I may hear a melody in my mind and that sounds drives the lyrics. Other times, I may get presented a beat and the music tells the entire story and all I do is fill in the blanks with my lyrics. I really don’t know how I write music…it’s just a feeling that comes to me.

Do you have messages that you like to get across in your music? if so please tell me about them.

Yes, my main goal is to encourage, inspire, and spread love. I don’t want to promote anything that will drive my audience in a negative direction.

Do you have any new singles, videos, or albums out that you would like to tell me and your fans about?

I have a new song release coming soon called Space Cadet Remix. I filmed parts of the music video underwater, and it was a fun experience! I look forward to sharing the song & music video on March 15th!

What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?

I am planning to shoot more films and sing more songs and perform on stages across the world. All I can say is, stay tuned!
